The hard part is doing it! It takes diligence and work to potty train a puppy.
Here are the simple steps to potty training your puppy: 1.
Choose a spot where you want him to go to the toilet.
The best place is obviously on a patch of grass outside the house.
Always take your puppy to that same patch of grass.
Whenever your puppy goes to the toilet where he is supposed to give him a treat and praise him.
This teaches him that when he goes to the toilet on the grass in his designated spot he gets a reward and good things happen to him.
Note: you must hand him the treat and praise him about one second after he finishes going.
And you must give it to him in the same spot that he went.
So that he knows the reward was for going to the toilet where he did.
If you ever catch your puppy going to the toilet inside the house don't get angry at him.
Simply pick him up and carry him to his toilet spot outside.
Wait for him to finish his business outside and then give him a treat and praise him, like usual.
Go back inside and clean up the mess.
Use white vinegar or a commercial odor remover to remove the smell from the carpet.
Puppies like to go to the toilet in places where they have gone previously.
If you don't completely remove the smell from the carpet he will likely eliminate in the same spot on the carpet again.
So you need to remove the smell from the carpet so there are no smells there which could trigger him to eliminate there again.
Take your puppy to the toilet every couple of hours throughout the day.
Take your puppy to the toilet after he wakes up from a sleep.
Puppies need to go to the toilet after they wake up.
While they're sleeping there bladders fill up.
So take him whenever he wakes up from a nap.
Especially first thing in the morning after a big sleep.
Take your puppy to the toilet after he eats.
Puppies need to eliminate after they eat a meal.
Schedule his meal times over the course of the day and take him out about 3 minutes after each meal and wait for him to go.
While he is in the middle of going to the toilet say "potty time.
" After a few weeks of you saying "potty time" while he eliminates he will learn what it means.
Then, in the future, you can then say "potty time" after you take him outside to tell him that you want him to go to the toilet.
If you see your puppy getting wrestles, walking round in circles, sniffing the carpet, or squatting run over and pick him up and carry him outside -- he is about to go!
